Try This Month: Use Language That Reduces Shame
Words shape identity. Many people with ADHD or learning disabilities grow up hearing labels like “lazy,” “careless,” or “not trying.”
This month, we interrupt that cycle.
Try this month:
Replace one shame-based phrase with a neutral or supportive one:
- “Lazy” → “Having trouble starting”
- “Careless” → “Needs support with details”
- “Not trying” → “Overloaded”
Language doesn’t excuse difficulty—it explains it.
This builds on naming effort and strengthens emotional safety.
This reworking is based in CBT – Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; reframing the way we speak and think about ourselves empowers us to achieve more and live better.
Next month, we’ll turn understanding into action by practicing one small act of advocacy.
